About Femiknit

Hi, I'm Karla

I started Femiknit because I love fashion. I had so many ideas for knitwear that I couldn't find patterns for anywhere, so I started designing them myself.

From trends to Reknit

Then I noticed something: my patterns were very much driven by trends. And trends come and go fast, which isn't good for the planet.

So I asked myself: how can we keep loving fashion without wasting so much? The answer was Reknit. Unravel the sweater you no longer wear, and knit the next trend from the same yarn.

South Africa

The trip that changed everything

Sweetwaters, South Africa

"We arrived at a small kindergarten, and 50 children came running towards us, wanting a hug. It made me so happy. I had never felt anything like it."

I felt a joy in everything. Even when it started to rain, the children were just happy and danced in the rain.

That's when it hit me: even though they had very little, they had something I really wanted. Gratitude for what they had, and the feeling of having enough, instead of the culture of overconsumption I knew from home. I felt like I brought something home with me.

2022

My first visit to iThemba Projects in Sweetwaters, South Africa.

2023

I went back. The children, the people and the work stayed with me.

Today

10% of all Femiknit sales goes to iThemba Projects.

iThemba means "hope" in Zulu, and that is exactly what they give: children and young people get access to education and mentoring. That's why 10% of all Femiknit sales goes to iThemba Projects, and why some of my patterns have Zulu names, like Ubuntu, Uziphu and Amabala.

Same yarn. New trend. Zero waste.

The problem isn't trends. It's that we throw them away. With Reknit, you don't have to.

Let's knit together

Every pattern includes a Reknit guide. Follow along on Instagram and TikTok for tips and everything behind the scenes, and tag me when you knit one of my patterns. I love seeing your Femi knits!
